Cotswold MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown paid tribute to Visitor Information Centres (VICs) in the Cotwolds during a visit to celebrate British Tourism Week last Friday (18 March), which ran from 12 March.

Cotswold District Council recently announced that they will provide grants totalling £44,000 to help fund a number of local VICs during the year ahead, despite pressure to reduce costs following a marked reduction in central government funding.

The tourism industry in the region is worth over £1 billion and with a number of major events taking place over the next 18 months, including the Royal Wedding, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the 2012 Olympics, the VICs will now be well placed to increase the flow of tourists to the Cotswolds.

Commenting on his visit Mr Clifton-Brown stated:

“It was a pleasure to visit the Cirencester Visitor Information Centre and to meet the wonderful staff who work incredibly hard to bring tourists to the Cotswolds.”

“Tourism is an incredibly important element of the local economy in the Cotswolds. The next year or so presents a number of opportunities to take advantage of.”

“I am confident that this funding will provide the necessary resources for the Visitor Information Centres to attract more visitors to the Cotswolds.”
