People’s Vote

Thank you for your email regarding the UK’s decision to leave the EU and a second EU referendum.

As you are aware the British people voted in record numbers to leave the EU in June 2016 and this was endorsed by the two main parties in the 2017 General Election who received 87% of the popular vote and furthermore by 76% of MPs who voted to trigger Article 50.

I believe this country will be perfectly capable of prospering outside of the EU but I hope that we will negotiate an exit deal that will ensure that we remain not only economically close to the EU but also in other areas such as security and the environment.

I appreciate you have strong feelings on the referendum, but the Prime Minister has been absolutely clear that there will be no second referendum. With 17.4 million votes to leave the European Union, more people voted for Brexit than have ever voted for anything else in the UK. The public delivered a clear verdict and my colleagues and I will continue to implement the referendum result and to make a success of it.
