Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, MP for The Cotswolds, has added his support to the Government’s plans to introduce elected Police and Crime Commissioners.
On 15 November 2012, for the first time ever, the public across England and Wales will elect a Police and Crime Commissioner who will be accountable for how crime is tackled in their police force area. This will provide stronger and more transparent accountability of the police, with the elected Police and Crime Commissioners able to hold Chief Constables and the police forces to account; effectively making the police answerable to the communities they serve.
Commenting on the upcoming elections, Mr Clifton-Brown said: “I very much welcome and support the introduction of elected Police and Crime Commissioners to cover the Gloucestershire Constabulary. The Conservative Party will be fielding a candidate and we will be fighting the election on a countywide basis. A selection process is currently underway within the Party, and we expect to choose a candidate, who will command widespread respect from the electorate, in the near future.”

“The Commissioner will have the power to set the budget and overall policing strategy for the police force, but the Chief Constable will retain full operational responsibility and control of day to day policing. It will be important for both the Commissioner and the Chief Constable to work together in order to continue to improve Gloucestershire Constabulary’s fight against crime.
