Here is an explanation of the Post Office closures which have affected the Cotswolds, the access criteria as set by Post Office Ltd and details of who to write to to protest against these closures.AFFECTED POST OFFICES

Guiting Power - 8 hours
Colesbourne - 5 hours
Sherborne - 5 hours
Aldsworth - 3 hours
Rendcombe - 3 hours
Temple Guiting - 2 hours

ACCESS CRITERIA

The closures come as a result of a Government decision to make the Post Office network more ‘modern’ and on a ‘stable footing for the future’

The programme features the compulsory compensated closure of up to 2500 post offices and the provision of 500 outreach service.

The have set up a minimum access criteria which are as follows:

• Nationally, 99 per cent. of the UK population to be within three miles and 90 per cent. of the population to be within one mile of their nearest post office outlet.

• 99 per cent. of the total population in deprived urban areas across the UK to be within one mile of their nearest post office outlet.

• 95 per cent. of the total urban population across the UK to be within one mile of their nearest post office outlet.

• 95 per cent. of the total rural population across the UK to be within three miles of their nearest post office outlet.

• 95 per cent. of the population of the postcode district to be within six miles of their nearest post office outlet.

CONSULTATION PERIOD

The consultation period is six weeks long, the start date being the 5 February, meaning the final date is the 17 March 2008.
