Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, MP for The Cotswolds, visited the Tetbury Information Centre on Saturday 10 March to herald the start of English Tourism Week 2012.
With many iconic events due to take place in 2012, including the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Torch Relay, the Cultural Olympiad and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the English Tourism Week has taken on a special significance in showcasing the quality and vibrancy of England to the rest of the world. The tourism industry is huge employer in England with 2.2 million people employed in the tourism industry, which is worth £97bn a year to the English economy.
Mr Clifton-Brown was able to meet the staff in their busy office and was also able to join in the fun around the town, which included guided walks, a visit to the wool market, a book signing, brass band music, and a chance to view the police museum.
Commenting on his visit to the Tetbury Information Centre Mr Clifton-Brown said: “Tourism is a hugely important part of the local economy and I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit the Tetbury Information Centre and to meet the excellent staff who assist the many tourists who come to this part of the Cotswolds.”
“Some huge events are taking place in 2012 and it is initiatives like the English Tourism Week and the work of people in Centres like this that will allow us to take advantage of the many people who will come to the UK this year.“
“I must commend Cotswold District Council for their continuing support for tourism in the Cotswolds and their funding of Visitor Information Centres, which continue to raise the profile of this wonderful part of the country both nationally and internationally.”
