Cotswold MP, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown organises meeting to discuss improving the safety of crossing at the road junction next to the Cross Inn, Avening.

The new Avening Post Office was officially opened by Mr Clifton-Brown on Friday 2 September where concerns about the safety of pedestrians crossing the road were raised. As a result of the presence of the Cross Inn and the opening of the new Post Office and a new shop an increasing number of people will be looking to cross the road and the chances of an incident would certainly increase.

In response Mr Clifton-Brown arranged the meeting between the interested parties to discuss how pedestrian safety could be improved.

At the meeting various options for the junction were discussed to look at slowing down approaching road traffic to increase the safety of those crossing to and from the Cross Inn.

Chris Franklin took on board the ideas that were discussed and committed to undertake some computer modelling. Once Gloucestershire County Council have devised a suitable proposal they will then present it to the Avening Parish Council in order to ascertain whether there would be popular consent for it within the village.

Following the meeting Mr Clifton-Brown said: “It was clear when we looked at this situation during the official opening of the Avening Post Office that there is a clear safety issue for people crossing the road.”

“Indeed, during the opening ceremony itself a mother pushing her young baby in a pram crossed and later re-crossed at the junction. On the return journey everyone present was able to see vividly the danger of the junction as the mother had to push the pram well into the road before she was able to see whether or not any vehicles were approaching. ”

“I therefore convened a meeting to discuss this matter with the owner of Avening Post Office, the local elected representatives and the relevant Highways Officer from Gloucestershire County Council.”

“I am glad that what the ideas put forward at the meeting will be duly considered by the County Council and I very much look forward to hearing of the outcome from Chris Franklin as to what solutions may be possible to resolve this problem.”
