Local MP, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown comments today on the publication of the Leveson Inquiry Report, An Inquiry into the Culture, Practices and Ethics of the Press
Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP said:
“Lord Justice Leveson has issued a challenge to the press to establish a new, tough system of regulation.
“I support the establishing of an independent self-regulatory regime. I believe that the plan that the industry has put forward goes a long way to meeting that challenge.
“Furthermore, this report blows apart the conspiracy theories that have been thrown at the Government over its relationship with News International. It establishes that no deal was struck between the Conservative Party and News International.
The Cotswolds MP went on to say:
“The principle of the Leveson Report is independent self-regulation of the press.
“I support this principle. On grounds of principle, practicality and necessity, I am not convinced at this stage that statute is necessary to achieve these objectives.
“I have been clear all along that the status quo is not an option and I am determined to see Lord Justice Leveson’s principles implemented.
“I did not support any statutory regulation in the area of press freedom. I do, however, acknowledge that there are others who favoured stricter regulation.
“Any form of statutory press control in a free society is fraught with danger, totally impractical and would take far too long to implement,” concluded Mr Clifton-Brown MP.
