Government to close 2,500 Post Offices.

Responding to the Government’s announcement of plans to close 2,500 more Post Offices over the next two years, Cotswolds MP, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown said:

“This announcement now puts over thirty Post Offices in the Cotswolds, at risk. This proves that the government is not governing for the whole nation, and simply doesn’t care about rural areas with very few public facilities. The government have given absolutely no thought to the repeated calls I have made to increase flexibility for Post Offices. I have called for cooperation with local councils to see what services they can provide through Post Offices. Why can’t the Post Office be allowed to supply welfare payments or TV licenses, provide internet access or other IT links, or indeed increase the flexibility of the Post Office Savings Account?”

“Villages throughout the Cotswolds are now set to lose their only shop, and this will impact hardest on the most vulnerable people in our society. In the Cotswolds, the elderly will be particularly effected, with limited public transport, the Post Office really is their only lifeline.”

“Like the Beeching railway station closures, this government will only realise what we’ve lost, when it’s gone. And this from the man who is set to become the next Chancellor!”
