The Office of National statistics released the latest constituency unemployment figures this week, which showed a fall in unemployment in The Cotswolds.

The number of unemployed claimants in the Cotswolds in June 2011 was down to 729, which represents a rate of 1.6% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, the 10th lowest rate in the UK’s 650 constituencies. The number of claimants is 214 lower than in June 2010 and 38 lower than in May 2011.

Commenting on this news Cotswolds MP, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, said: “These statistics are a very encouraging indication of the strength of the economy of the Cotswolds.”

“Nationally unemployment fell by 26,000 in the three months up until May and it is heartening to see these figures show this trend is continuing in the Cotswolds.”

“Despite tough economic circumstances local businesses are, on the whole, clearly prospering and are providing the foundation for our economic recovery.”
