Cotswold MP, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, welcomed the opening yesterday (22 August) of the new double track on the Cotswold Line.
Sixteen miles of new track opened yesterday between Moreton-in-Marsh and Evesham with the intention of improving the reliability and speed of journey times between London, Oxford and Worcester.
The Cotswold line previously had only a single track railway along much of its length, which limited the number of trains that could run on it and caused regular delays for commuters travelling the line.
Combined with the four miles of double track between Ascott-under-Wychwood and Charlbury, which opened in June, the opening of the double track between Moreton-in-Marsh and Evesham marks the completion of Network Rail’s two year, £67 million pound scheme to lay twenty miles of double track on the Cotswold Line.
Commenting on the opening of the double track Mr Clifton-Brown stated: “At a time when more people are using trains than ever before this is undoubtedly excellent news for commuters and train users on Cotswold Line and will also be of significant benefit for businesses and tourists alike.”
“For too long people have had to put up with a poor service blighted by unreliability and delays and at long last users of the Cotswold Line have the reality of faster and more punctual trains.”
“I very much hope that lessons from the redoubling of the Cotswold Line can be learned and applied to the Swindon to Kemble redoubling, for which the Chancellor announced funding of £41.7 million for earlier this year, and that rail users on the Swindon to Kemble line can look forward to a similar improvement in service in the near future.”
