Cotswolds MP welcomes the Home Secretary’s statement today that plans to merge Police forces are to be scrapped.

Cotswolds MP, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown has welcomed the Home Secretary’s statement today that plans to merge Police forces are to be scrapped. The plans included a proposal to merge Gloucestershire Constabulary with the entire South West; or merge the Gloucestershire force with Wiltshire, Avon, Somerset and Dorset.

Responding to a Point of Order in the Commons, the Home Secretary said that there would be no “forced” mergers.

Mr Clifton-Brown said: “I am delighted at this massive u-turn by the Government, I have opposed merges since their inception. However, I think our Chief Constable, Tim Brain, deserves a huge amount of credit. This “u-turn” is a result of his relentless campaign; nationally through ACPO and locally within Gloucestershire”.
