Eighteen senior newspaper, magazine and broadcast editors from Beijing visited the Houses of Parliament and met with Sir Geoffrey Clifton Brown MP, Deputy-Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on China.
The journalists discussed British-China relations and are part of a course at the China Media Centre at Westminster University.
Sir Geoffrey said, “As Deputy-Chairman of the APPG on China welcoming delegations to Parliament is an important way to engage in discussions on our political system and explain the fascinating history and traditions of the Palace of Westminster. I have worked for many years to build strong trade links between Britain and China, but visits such as these are as focused on the cultural and educational ties between our countries as the economic ones.”
University of Westminster Course Leader, Derek Conway said, “Our guests from Beijing were grateful for Sir Geoffrey’s welcome and the time taken to explain the differences between our systems of government. They were amazed by the work of an MP, especially the time spent in constituencies dealing directly with the public.
The work of the APPG-China, combining parliamentarians from all the political parties, is very supportive in developing good relations with a major global economy, so Sir Geoffrey's particular knowledge of trade matters was valuable.”
