Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, Member of Parliament for The Cotswolds, has expressed his delight that efforts to resolve the A417 ‘Missing Link’ are now one step closer to being completed after the Highways Agency has added the road to its list of challenged roads in the South West.

The Highways Agency’s recognition that the road needs improving follows Mr Clifton-Brown’s campaign for many years to find a satisfactory solution. It also comes just ahead of a joint petition to Downing Street that Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP will be leading along with Cllr Mark Hawthorne, Leader of Gloucestershire County Council and Dr Diane Savory, Chairman of GFirst.

Mr Clifton-Brown is currently building an alliance of Members of Parliament whose constituencies are affected by the A417 to show support for scheme and to encourage the Government to include the improvements in their 2015 spending priorities.

Commenting afterwards Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP said “The most recent fatality following an accident on Easter Sunday reminds us what a dangerous road this is and why it needs to receive urgent attention

I am therefore obviously delighted that the A417 Loop Scheme has been added to the Highways Agency’s short list for roads that need improvement. It shows that we are a step closer to finally achieving a satisfactory solution to this problem. I will be continuing to press the point to Government Ministers that this road needs Government money urgently so that these crucial works can take place as soon as possible.”
