No10: Gatherings

I have received a high number of emails and letters in the last few months on this matter and I have been thoroughly and carefully considering all the points raised.

I absolutely understand why so many are upset with the number of allegations of gatherings in Downing Street during the pandemic. Throughout this period most people were carefully following the rules, I urged constituents to do this and ensured that my team and I were always following the latest guidance.

The recent turn of events have been deeply disappointing. The fact that the Met police have become involved prevented Sue Gray from yet publishing the report in full. As I said most forcefully in recent interviews, I think the report needs to be published in full as soon as possible, so that anyone who wishes to read it can do so. Sadly, until the police have concluded their report this is not possible, and the speculation and uncertainty will continue.

I am sure you can imagine that as Treasurer of the 1922 Committee, I have conveyed some fairly strong views to the Prime Minister and will be monitoring the situation carefully.
